Alexandros Gasparatos

Alexandros Gasparatos is Associate Professor of Sustainability Science at the Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science (IR3S), University of Tokyo. Before joining IR3S, he conducted research at the University of Oxford (2011-2013), the Institute of Advanced Studies of the United Nations University (UNU-IAS) (2008-2011), and the University of Dundee (2006-2008). He has a background in chemistry (BSc), environmental sciences (MSc), and ecological economics (PhD).
As an ecological economist, he is interested in the development, refinement, and application of sustainability assessment and ecosystem services valuation tools. He has applied such tools for different issues such as food/energy security, green economy, natural disasters, urban biodiversity, and urban metabolism, and in geographical contexts as diverse as Brazil, Indonesia, Japan, Malawi, Mozambique, Philippines, Swaziland, and the UK.
