Caroline is a Research Assistant in the Sustainability Research Institute at University of East London, specialising in biodiversity and urban green infrastructure (UGI) design. Currently she is working on the EU Horizon 2020 project Connecting Nature, helping to develop mechanisms for upscaling nature-based solutions (NBS) in cities. Her PhD research investigated innovative UGI solutions designed to support biodiversity threatened by the loss of brownfield habitat mosaics to development. This included experimental extensive green roofs and ground level urban landscaping designed using ecomimicry of key features of the conservation priority habitat Open Mosaic Habitat on Previously Developed Land. The study was part of the EU FP7 project TURAS. Elements of the research were co-created with a developer to provide targeted UGI measures that addressed biodiversity mitigation targets for the development. Caroline also has extensive professional experience in ecological consultancy, and specialises in bat and bird surveys.
