Ian Douglas

Manchester

Ian lived in London until 1955, then in Australia, and finally in Manchester, England, where he is Emeritus Professor at the University of Manchester. He became aware of nature in the city in 1966 during his first visit to Malaysia. The impact of rapid urbanisation on the humid tropical environment was so dramatic and potentially hazardous that he felt he should teach the physical geography of the city. His 1983 book, “The Urban Environment”, took an integrated of urban ecology and environment. More recently, he has co-edited the “Routledge Handbook of Urban Ecology” and produced a textbook, “Urban Ecology: an Introduction”, with Philip James.
