Matthew Freer

Matthew Freer is Assistant Director of Landscape, Chicago Park District.
He serves as Assistant Director in the Department of Cultural and Natural Resources, working on the Natural Areas Team. He oversees the Environmental Conservation & Engagement unit, executes natural areas development and management, nature-based programming and eco-recreation across Chicago. Matt’s efforts primarily focus on administration; including budget management, grants, planning, community and institutional partnerships, public engagement, policies and procedures. Matt has over 17 years of experience in natural area restoration throughout the Midwest. He walks the line between ecologist, programmer and community liaison. Matt enjoys the intersection of natural areas in urban areas where human health, ecological health, social justice and recreation all meet.
