
Monika Lawrence
Bemidji
Born in 1963, Monika Lawrence grew up in a small town in East Germany. She graduated from the Teachers Training College in Potsdam in 1985, but after the German Reunification she engaged in social work in Erfurt. She took photography classes with Tom Sandberg (Photo School Am Schiffbauerdamm) and Ute Mahler (Ostkreuz Photo School) in Berlin. In 2007 Monika moved to the United States. From 2009 on she has been teaching Digital Photography and Photojournalism as an adjunct instructor at Bemidji State University. Her photographic focus is on people in their environment as well as people’s impact on the natural environment. Another emphasis in her work is on dance, which is about other, creatively imagined environments. Currently she is portraying artists at work. Monika Lawrence is married; she lives and works with her husband Mark in Bemidji; MN.
