Brooklyn

Paula Z. Segal is a writer, attorney and activist living in Brooklyn. She founded and directs 596 Acres, New York City’s community land access advocacy organization. 596 Acres has helped neighbors create 36 new community parks, farms and gardens on city-owned vacant land left warehoused in the wake of twentieth century cycles of disinvestment and “renewal.” To understand their city better, 596 Acres created the first comprehensive online atlas of every “Urban Renewal” plan adopted by the City of New York between 1949 and 2015: urbanreviewer.org.
