Steve takes particular interest in design in use matters, emphasising the importance of joined-up (systems) thinking and believes enabling and positive user experiences of built environments leads to greater wellbeing and effectiveness. He is an Architect, Director of Building User Design, a Built Environment Expert for Design Council CABE, a Senior Research Fellow at the Schumacher Institute for Sustainable Systems and Design Director of a start-up called Initiative Homes. He is also a member of the National Register of Access Consultants, the Building Research Establishment Global’s Standing Panel of Experts and several British Standards Institute (or BSI) committees. These include BSI committees responsible for access within the built environment and sustainability—as well as steering groups for several British Standards on Facilities Management. He also leads efforts towards Design for the Mind guidance and has been a steering group member for a Code of Practice for the Recognition of Dementia-Friendly Communities.
