Terike Haapoja is a visual artist based in New York. Haapoja’s work investigates the existential and political boundaries of our world, with a specific focus on issues arising from the anthropocentric world view of Western traditions. Animality, multispecies politics, cohabitation, time, loss, and repairing connections are recurring themes in Haapoja’s work. Projects by Gustafsson&Haapoja, an ongoing collaboration with writer Laura Gustafsson, propose utopian alternatives for anthropocentric institutions. The work of Terike Haapoja and Gustafsson&Haapoja have been exhibited widely in solo and group shows internationally, recent exhibitions including Bucharest Biennale, Taipei Biennale, Venice Biennale, Momentum Biennale, Helsinki Biennale, New Tretyakov Gallery Moscow, Kalmar Art Museum, CCCB Barcelona, Kindl Berlin, Chronus Art Center Shanghai, Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art Helsinki, ZKM Germany, ISCP New York. Haapoja represented Finland in the Venice Biennale in 2013 with a solo show in the Nordic Pavilion. Her work has been awarded with the Guggenheim Fellowship (2022), ANTI Prize for Live Art (2016), Finnish State Art Prize (2016) Dukaatti prize (2008), Säde -prize (2009) and Finland’s Festival’s artist of the year -honorary mention (2007). Gustafsson&Haapoja has been awarded with the Finnish State media art award (2016) and Kiila-prize (2013). Haapoja is an adjunct professor at Parsons Fine Arts and NYU Steinhardt, New York.
